SGX lists 10 stocks that provide infrastructure for water, wastewater treatment and supply services, and they have a combined market capitalisation of nearly S$10 billion. In the 2019 YTD, the 3 largest capitalised, best-performing water plays were: SIIC Environment (+34.5%), CITIC Envirotech (+18.4%), and China Everbright Water (+18.3%).
The STI Reserve List is comprised of Mapletree Commercial Trust, Suntec REIT, Mapletree Logistics Trust, Keppel REIT and Mapletree North Asia Commercial Trust. Together, the five REITs have averaged a 13.4% total return in 2019 YTD. In 2019 YTD, trading volumes for four of the five REITs, Mapletree Commercial Trust, Mapletree Logistics Trust, Keppel REIT and Mapletree North Asia Commercial Trust, have surged 40% compared to their combined trading volumes in 2018.
In the 2019 YTD, the 3 largest capitalised, best-performing constituents of the iEdge SG Oil & Gas Index were: Rex International (+32.7%), China Aviation Oil (+20.8%) and GSS Energy (+9.9%). They have averaged a total return of +21.1% in the YTD, bringing their 1Y and 3Y total returns to -4.5% and 34.9% respectively. Share prices of most Index constituents have also recovered from their 12M troughs, in line with recent crude gains.
In Singapore, approximately 80 stocks are regarded as “mid-cap” stocks on their relative market capitalisation, which ranges from S$1 billion to S$6 billion. Of the group, 39 stocks currently maintain a market capitalisation between S$1 billion and S$2 billion. Of the 39 stocks, two technology stocks, Hi-P International & Silverlake Axis, were the strongest segment in the 2019 YTD, averaging a 55.5% return, while the Real Estate Sector with 22 of the 39 stocks, averaged an 8.0% total return.
There are more than 130 companies on SGX that are either headquartered or have their principal place of business in Hong Kong and/or Mainland China, with a combined market cap of over S$200 billion. Among them, pure China-based plays account for just under 100. Among the pure China-based plays, the 5 best performers in Jan-Feb 2019 were: Sunpower (+80.0%), China Jinjiang Environment (+38.0%), SIIC Environment (+36.4%), China Aviation Oil (+29.2%), and CITIC Envirotech (+19.7%).
In the first 2 months of 2019, the 5 best-performing healthcare service providers were: ISEC Healthcare (+11.8%), Thomson Medical (+9.5%), Singapore Medical Group (+8.7%), Medinex (+5.6%), and Asian Healthcare Specialists (+5.4%). They averaged a total return of +8.2% over the period.
In Feb 2019, the STI gained 0.7% and 15 SGX primary-listed stocks repurchased 20 million shares with total consideration of S$32 million. This was up from S$26 million in Jan 2019 and down year-on-year from S$134 million in Feb 2018. 4 stocks commenced new buyback mandates in the month of Feb 2019: Singtel, EuroSports Global, Starburst Holdings & Ecowise Holdings. Relative to outstanding shares, EuroSports Global bought back 0.27% of its shares during the month.
Over 40 stocks listed on SGX are either headquartered in Malaysia or have core operations based in the country, and have a combined market cap of over S$60 billion. The 5 best performers in the YTD were: Silverlake Axis (+33.5%), Aspen Group (+28.0%), JB Foods (+16.1%), ISEC Healthcare (+13.7%), and Frencken Group (+11.9%). They have averaged a total return of +20.6% in the YTD, bringing their 1Y and 3Y total returns to -8.3% and +101.4% respectively.
SGX has strong links to the different ASEAN markets. It lists over 20 companies which are either headquartered or have their core operations based in Indonesia, and these stocks have a combined market cap of nearly S$20 billion. The 5 best-performing Indonesia-based stocks in the YTD were: Lippo Malls Indonesia Retail Trust (+26.4%), QAF (+17.9%), Moya Holdings (+17.1%), Golden Agri-Resources (+16.3%), and Indofood Agri Resources (+15.2%).
The 10 largest transport-linked plays on SGX have a combined market capitalisation of more than S$30 billion. They include airline, bus, subway and taxi operators, shipping companies, as well as those that provide engineering support, logistics, inflight catering and airport handling services. Among the 10, the five largest, best-performing transport-linked plays in the YTD are: SBS Transit (+18.1%), ComfortDelGro (+13.0%), SATS (+9.4%), SIA (+4.4%), and PACC Offshore (+3.4%).
