Highlights of SGX’s 10 Largest Transport-Linked Stocks

The 10 largest transport-linked plays on SGX have a combined market capitalisation of more than S$30 billion. They include airline, bus, subway and taxi operators, shipping companies, as well as those that provide engineering support, logistics, inflight catering and airport handling services. Among the 10, the five largest, best-performing transport-linked plays in the YTD are: SBS Transit (+18.1%), ComfortDelGro (+13.0%), SATS (+9.4%), SIA (+4.4%), and PACC Offshore (+3.4%).

SGX Liquidity-themed Consumer Sector Index Posts 10% YTD Gain

For 2019 YTD, the FTSE ST Consumer Goods & Services Liquid 20 Index generated a 9.9% total return, a turnaround from its 9.2% decline in 2018. In 2019 YTD, as many as 18 of the 20 stocks have generated gains, with performances led by ThaiBev, Olam Int & Genting SG. The median P/E of the Liquid 20 constituents is 17.6x and compares to 17.3x for the top quartile of Consumer Goods & Services stocks by Market Cap, across the stock markets of Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Korea, Australia and New Zealand.

In Jan 2019, Consumer Staples and Consumer Discretionary were top net buy sectors after REITs, garnering institutional net inflows of S$50.3 million and S$49.2 million respectively, SGX data showed. Consumer Staples was also ranked the 4th best-performing sector with a total return of 8.4%. The 10 largest F&B stocks on SGX with a market capitalisation of above S$200 million that were best performers in the YTD have a combined market cap of over S$36 billion. Among them, the five best performers in the YTD were: Thai Beverage (+35.5%), QAF (+21.4%), Olam (+17.0%), JB Foods (+12.9%), and Indofood Agri Resources (+12.6%).

The 10 largest IT stocks on SGX have a combined market cap of over S$12 billion, and span sub-segments ranging from Computer Hardware, Electronic Components and Industrial Machinery to Software Services and Specialty Finance. Among the 10, 5 of the best performers in the 2019 YTD were: Creative Tech (+46.2%), Chuan Hup (+25.5%), Silverlake Axis (+22.9%), UMS (+20.2%), and Venture (+18.2%). They averaged a YTD total return of 26.6%.

Highlights of China-Related S-REITs and Developers

The 10 REITs on SGX that report revenues to China have a combined market cap of nearly S$18 billion. The 5 best performers in the YTD were: Mapletree North Asia (+10.5%), OUE Commercial (+10.4%), Ascott Residence (+9.2%), Mapletree Logistics (+8.8%), and EC World REIT (+8.0%). The 5 largest real estate developers on SGX that report more than one-third of total revenues to China have a combined market cap of about S$18 billion. In the YTD, the 3 best performers were: Yanlord Land (+14.8%), Ying Li (+7.8%), and CapitaLand (+7.1%).

Big Utility Stocks Began 2019 with Momentum

Singapore’s 5 largest capitalised utility stocks are Keppel Infrastructure Trust, CITIC Envirotech, China Everbright Water, China Jinjiang Environment and SIIC Environment Holdings, with a combined market capitalisation of S$5.7 billion. All 5 stocks have made a firm start to the 2019 YTD. The most recent stock of the Utilities Sector to list was Union Gas Holdings, which has gained 6% in the 2019 YTD following a comparative defensive total return of 2% in 2018.

Tourism-Related Stocks Ride Growth in Visitor Arrivals

The 15 largest stocks with exposure to the tourist industry on SGX averaged a total return of 2.7% in the YTD, compared with average total returns of -10.7% in 2018. Genting Singapore and Singapore Airlines, the 2 largest players within this group, have also gained 10.8% and 3.5% respectively in the YTD.

The performance of Singapore's listed healthcare sector is measured by the iEdge SG All Healthcare Index. In the YTD, the iEdge SG All Healthcare Index has generated a total return of 7.6% vs the benchmark STI's total return of 3.9%. In the YTD, the 5 largest and best-performing healthcare services stocks were: ISEC Healthcare (+7.8%), Singapore Medical Group (+3.8%), OUE Lippo (+3.1%), Thomson Medical (+2.7%), and IHH Healthcare (+1.7%). They averaged a total return of +3.8% over the period.

Rising Crude Prices Lift Singapore’s Largest Shipyard Stocks

In the YTD, Singapore’s three biggest shipyard stocks have averaged a total return of +6.2%, bringing their 1Y and 3Y total returns to -24.1% and +41.3% respectively. Following crude’s rally, these three largest shipyard plays are now trading marginally above par value at an average P/B ratio of 1.2x. Their share prices have also recovered in tandem with higher oil prices – rebounding an average 27% from their 52W lows.

STI’s Least Performers in 2018 amongst STI Leaders in Early 2019

Six of the seven least performing STI stocks of 2018 were amongst the STI’s 10 strongest stocks in the 2019 year through to 23 Jan. Of these six STI stocks, the two that have been the strongest over the three weeks were Genting and Thai Bev. The two stocks were also amongst the five STI stocks subject to the most net capital inflow by institutional investors from 31 Dec to 18 Jan.
