9 SGX Listed Trusts Raised S$2.7 Billion via Rights Issues in Last 18 Months

Between January 2017 and June 2018, 8 REITs and 1 stapled trust have raised a total of S$2.7 billion in funds through rights issues, mostly to finance new property investments. They are: Frasers Logistics, Manulife REIT, ESR-REIT, CCT, Mapletree Logistics, Cache, CDL, Ascott Residence, and Sabana REIT. In 3Q18, these 9 trusts have registered a total return of +1.9%. This brings their 12M and 3Y total returns to -3.8% and +15.0% respectively. They have also averaged an aggregate leverage ratio of 35.6%, a dividend indicated yield of 6.9% and a price-to-book ratio of 0.9.

The latest quarterly reporting season for Singapore REITs and Business Trusts began last week, with SPH REIT releasing its results for the year ended 31 Aug 2018. This was followed by Keppel REIT, Keppel DC REIT, and First REIT, which unveiled their 3Q earnings earlier this week. The iEdge S-REIT Index has 36 constituents, comprising 28 REITs, six stapled trusts and two property trusts. With a combined market capitalisation of nearly S$80 billion, they have averaged a total return of -5.7% in the 2018 YTD, bringing their 12-month and three-year total returns to -2.5% and 24.5% respectively.

Yesterday, Singapore Press Holdings kick-started the September quarter earnings reporting season for the constituents of the benchmark STI by releasing its results for the year ended 31 Aug 2018. In the YTD, the STI has generated a total return of -7%. The 30 Index constituents have a combined market capitalisation of over S$500 billion. They have averaged a total return of -9.6% in the YTD, bringing their 12-month and three-year total returns to -8.8% and +12.9% respectively.

Three Largest Agriculture Stocks Averaged 8% Total Return in 3Q18

SGX lists six stocks with a market capitalisation above S$1 billion that maintain a significant agriculture business. The six – Wilmar, Olam, Golden Agri-Resources, First Resources, Japfa and Bumitama Agri – have a combined market capitalisation of more than S$30 billion. In 3Q18, the best-performing agri stocks were Bumitama Agri (+9.2%), First Resources (+8.5%) and Wilmar (+6.4%). These three plays averaged a total return of 8.0% over the quarter, reversing their negative returns in 1H18. Japfa was the only stock that registered positive total returns of +3.1% and +25.8% for 3Q18 and 1H18 respectively.

5 Largest OSV Plays Average 21% Rebound From 12-Month Lows in 3Q18

OSV plays are widely regarded as one of the key beneficiaries of a rebound in oil prices. Crude, which has gained more than 20% since the start of the year, continues to hover near four-year highs, on fears of a sustained supply crunch. In 3Q18, the five largest SGX listed OSV stocks that saw the strongest price recovery from their 52-week lows were: Vallianz Holdings (28.6%), Mermaid Maritime (21.4%), Sinwa (21.1%), Dyna-Mac Holdings (18.0%), and PACC Offshore Services (17.4%). These five stocks averaged a 21.3% price gain from their respective 12-month troughs.

35 Companies Buy Back Shares in Sept, as STI Rebounded 1.4%

In September, 35 stocks repurchased 32 million shares for a total consideration of S$94 million. The buyback consideration has brought the total consideration over the first nine months of 2018 to SS$1.3 billion, which is three times the total buyback consideration in 2017. The 35 stocks included seven STI constituents - DBS, OCBC, CDL, SGX, Sembcorp Industries, UOB & SATS. Buybacks by these seven stocks made up as much as S$80 million, or 85%, of the S$94 million in consideration.

Singtel, NetLink NBN Trust, StarHub & M1 have all generated similar gains in the September quarter-to-date, averaging +5.5% total returns, which has trimmed their average year-to-date decline in total return to -12.5%. Singtel, StarHub & M1 have averaged annualised total returns of 7.4% from respective IPO dates to present. The three companies are currently valued at similar discounts to their five year average P/E ratios. Business Trust - NetLink NBN Trust - listed in July 2017.

Singapore's healthcare sector, typically viewed as a defensive segment and poised to enjoy multi-year growth prospects, has benefited from rotational fund flows recently, as investors took refuge in haven assets following a rise in risk-aversion. The five best-yielding constituents of the iEdge SG All Healthcare Index are: First REIT (6.9%), ISEC Healthcare (4.9%), Singapore O&G (4.9%), Parkway Life REIT (4.8%), and Talkmed Group (3.4%). These 5 stocks have averaged a dividend indicated yield of 5.0%.

Singapore's healthcare sector - typically viewed as defensive and poised to enjoy multi-year growth prospects - has benefited from rotational fund flows recently. This follows increased risk-aversion on the back of higher market volatility, rising US-China trade tensions and an emerging market currency crisis. In 3Q18 to-date, the five best-performing constituents of the SGX All Healthcare Index were: Riverstone (+14.0%), Raffles Medical Group (+11.4%), Aoxin Q & M Dental (+9.8%), Camsing Healthcare (+9.5%), and ISEC Healthcare (+8.0%). These 5 healthcare plays have averaged a total return of +10.5% over the period.

Dairy Farm International Scheduled to Join STI on 24 September 2018

Dairy Farm International is scheduled to join the STI effective Monday 24 September, replacing StarHub. On inclusion the leading pan-Asian retailer will be one of five STI constituents that are quoted and traded in USD. Dairy Farm is expected to make up between 1.0% and 1.5% of the STI weights, based on free-float information and STI weights as of 29 June 2018. The Consumer Goods Industry will then have four stocks in the STI (incl. Thai Bev, Wilmar & GAR) representing between 6% and 7% of the STI weights.
