Singapore’s 50 most actively traded stocks of early 2020 averaged a 2% return over the first 12 sessions of January, with performances led by AusGroup, Keppel DC REIT, Mapletree Industrial Trust, CapitaLand Commercial Trust and AEM Holdings.
Wilmar, Japfa and Golden-Agri have led Singapore’s 10 most traded Agriculture, Food and Beverage stocks for the first eight sessions of 2020. The 10 stocks averaged 13% total returns in 2019, with their median return at 17% outpacing regional and global peers. Sheng Siong Group, Koufu Group, SATS and First Resources all report at least four-fifths of their revenue to Singapore. The four stocks saw S$88 million in net institutional inflow in 2019, with average/median total returns of 22%/23%.
10 Energy-related stocks ranked amongst Singapore’s most traded 200 stocks of 2019, generating a median total return of 23% for the year. The 10 Energy-related stocks also saw 40% median volatility in 2019, with the second-best performer of the group in 2019, Interra, seeing the highest volatility. Rex International and Sunpower Group were also amongst the strongest gainers in 2019.
The Real Estate (ex-REITs) sector was among the top net buy sectors on SGX in Dec 2019, garnering net institutional inflows of S$110.4 million. The real estate developer stocks that saw the highest net institutional inflows in December were CapitaLand (+S$42.4mil), UOL Group (+S$28.6mil) and City Developments (+S$24.0mil).
The combined daily trading turnover of the 160 Singapore-listed stocks averaged S$55 million per day in 2019 with the most actively traded Small-Cap stocks including AEM Holdings, Rex International Holding, UMS Holdings, Eagle Hospitality Trust and First REIT. AEM Holdings and UMS Holdings were also among Singapore’s 10 Small-Cap stocks that saw the highest net institutional inflows proportionate to their year-end market capitalisation.
Singapore’s Mid-Cap Stocks performed in-line with the stocks of the same market capitalisation across Asia in 2019. Of Singapore’s 40 most traded Mid-Cap Companies, 19 Companies outpaced the STI in 2019. Of the 40 Mid-Cap Companies, the 5 strongest performers in 2019 included Hi-P International, SBS Transit, Bumitama Agri, SIA Engineering and Oxley Holdings.
The FTSE ST China Index consists of stocks of the FTSE ST All-Share Index that have reported either at least 50% of their revenues from Mainland China, or have at least 50% of their operating assets located in the country. The 5 best performers among the 10 largest constituents over the course of 2019 were: Sasseur REIT, CITIC Envirotech, Wilmar, CapitaLand Retail China Trust and China Aviation Oil.
Singapore’s REITs, stapled and property trusts contributed 24% to day-to-day turnover of Singapore’s stock market in 2019, whilst maintaining a combined market value that was 12% of Singapore’s stock market capitalisation at the end of 2019. These 43 trusts also generated average total returns of 23% in 2019, and ended 2019 with an average 6% distribution yield.
In the month of Dec 2019, 20 SGX primary-listed stocks bought back 43 million shares for a total consideration of S$70 million. This was up from S$52 million in consideration for Nov 2019, and similar to the S$78 million filed for Dec 2018. The 2019 buyback consideration tally was led by OCBC, DBS, Keppel REIT, ST Engineering and Yangzijiang.
The STI ended 2019 at 3,222.8, generating a 9.4% total return consisting of price appreciation and dividend returns. This was in-line with the STI’s 10 year average annualised total returns of 9.2% going into 2019.
