5 Best-Performing SGX Small-Cap Consumer Stocks Average 26% YTD Return

  • There are nearly 200 companies listed on SGX that have a market cap range of S$100 million to slightly above S$2 billion. Based on classifications by the FTSE ST Index series, these stocks fall into the small-cap category.

  • Within this universe of 200 small-cap stocks, around 50 are categorised to the Consumer Discretionary and Consumer Staples industries, and include manufacturers / distributors of consumer electronics, apparel, packaged foods and meats, operators of hotels, restaurants and supermarkets, as well as food and beverage retailers.

  • The five best performers among these 50 consumer stocks in the YTD were: Japfa (+33.7%), BreadTalk (+31.4%), JB Foods (+27.8%), Sheng Siong (+19.9%), and Cortina (+18.6%). These five have averaged a total return of 26.3% over this period.




The FTSE ST Index series classifies small-cap stocks that trade on SGX as those with a market capitalisation ranging from S$100 million to slightly above S$2 billion. Beyond the 65 constituents of the FTSE ST Small Cap Index, there are nearly 200 small-cap stocks on SGX that fall within this market cap range.

Within this universe of 200 small-cap stocks, around 50 are categorised to the Consumer Discretionary and Consumer Staples industries. These segments include manufacturers and distributors of automobiles, household appliances, consumer electronics, apparel, textiles and footwear, operators of hotels, restaurants and leisure facilities, food and beverage retailers, as well as supermarket and department store operators.

Among these 50 small-cap Consumer Discretionary and Consumer Staples stocks, the 10 best performers have averaged a total return of 18.3% in the 2018 year-to-date. This brings their 12-month and three-year average total returns to 27.3% and 35.6% respectively. These 10 companies are involved in the packaged foods and meats businesses, restaurant operations, food and apparel retail, computer and electronics retail, education services, as well as auto distribution.

Among the 10, the five best performers in the YTD were: Japfa (+33.7%), BreadTalk (+31.4%), JB Foods (+27.8%), Sheng Siong (+19.9%), and Cortina (+18.6%). Three of them are classified to the Consumer Staples, and the remaining two to the Consumer Discretionary, sub-segments. In the YTD, these five stocks have averaged a total return of 26.3%.
