Regional Healthcare Stocks Leading the World in 2018 YTD

The SGX All Healthcare Index has gained 4.6% in the 2018 YTD, similar to the MSCI AC Asia Pacific Health Care Index returns of 4.7%, and higher than the MSCI World Health Care Index decline of 2.1%. The 5 largest capitalised stocks of the SGX All Healthcare Index include IHH Healthcare Bhd, Top Glove Corp Bhd, Haw Par Corp, Raffles Medical Group and Tianjin Zhong Xin Pharm Group. All five stocks have gained in the YTD, with average total returns of 11.6% and median total returns of 5.7%.

Five STI Stocks Averaged 2%+ Daily Swings in 1Q18

The STI has been amongst the three strongest Indices of Asia Pacific in the 2018 YTD. The STI’s 1.5% total return compares to an average decline of 3.0% for the three benchmarks of Japan, Hong Kong and Australia. The STI has also seen an increase in its volatility, with its 30 day volatility gauge climbing to 17% which is the highest level for the past two years. Yangzijiang Shipbuilding, Golden-Agri Resources, Genting Singapore, Venture and CapitaLand Commercial Trust have averaged daily trading ranges (difference between daily high and low) of more than 2.0% over 1Q18.

Sasseur REIT – Asia’s First Outlet Mall REIT – Debuts on SGX

Sasseur REIT is the first Outlet Mall REIT listed in Asia. It has an initial portfolio of four retail outlet mall properties in the fast-growing cities of Chongqing, Kunming and Hefei in the People’s Republic of China. Including Sasseur REIT, there are now 10 Retail REITs as categorised by GICS, which make up 23% of the REITs and property trusts listed on SGX. The 10 retail trusts have a combined market capitalisation of S$22.8 billion and average a dividend yield of 6.7% (after including Sasseur REIT’s projected dividend yield of 7.5% for the 2018 forecast period).

FTSE ST Fledgling Index’s Five Best-Performing New Constituents Avg 21% YTD Gain

In FTSE’s latest semi-annual review of its ST Index series, 20 component stocks were added to the FTSE ST Fledgling Index, while 8 were removed. After changes that took effect on 19 March, the Fledgling Index now comprises 219 stocks, with a combined market capitalisation of S$25.7 billion. In the 2018 year-to-date, the five best-performing inclusions to the FTSE ST Fledgling Index were: APAC Realty (36.0%), Blumont Group (33.3%), Cityneon (14.4%), Sarine Technologies (13.0%) and Debao Property (8.7%).

Ascendas-Singbridge Building Strengths & Deepening its Presence

Jointly owned by Temasek Holdings and JTC Corporation, Ascendas-Singbridge undertakes urbanisation development projects and manages 3 SGX-listed trusts include Ascendas REIT, Ascendas India Trust and Ascendas Hospitality Trust, and a series of private real estate funds. Total AUM was S$22.4 billion as of March 2017. The three trusts respectively represent REITs, Business Trusts and the Stapled Trusts, which maintain different ownership and management structures were listed on SGX between November 2002 and July 2012, have averaged 8.8% annualised total returns from their respective IPO dates.

Mapletree Delivered Growth & Value to its REIT Unitholders

Mapletree Investments was established in December 2000 to hold non-port properties transferred from PSA Corporation to Temasek Holdings. Between 2005 and 2013, Mapletree Logistics Trust (“MLT”), Mapletree Industrial Trust (“MIT”), Mapletree Commercial Trust (“MCT”) and Mapletree Greater China Commercial Trust (“MGCCT”) listed on SGX. Combined market cap of these REITs grew 2.6x to present. The four Mapletree REITS have averaged 14.5% distribution-inclusive returns from IPO date to present & currently maintain an average 6.0% distribution yield. MIT has been the strongest performer of the four REITs, with 18.2% average annualised total returns.

Temasek is a 100% Singapore Government-owned Investment Company, established in 1974 with the purpose of separating Singapore Government’s policy making role from the management of its commercial assets. Temasek includes SGX-listed stocks DBS Group Holdings, Singtel, Keppel Corp, Sembcorp Industries, ST Engineering, Singapore Airlines, CapitaLand, Olam International and SATS as major portfolio investments. Of the 9 stocks, 6 have been listed for the past 20 years, averaging annualised total returns of 8.1%. Three stocks, Sembcorp Industries, SATS and Olam International listed within the 20 years, averaging 10.8% annualised total returns from respective debuts.

The 25 largest capitalised Real Estate stocks that reported more than 80% of their revenue to Singapore based on Annual Reports, maintain an average market cap of S$3.0 billion, ranging from S$7.5 billion for Ascendas REIT to S$718 million for Hong Fok Corp. After strong performances in 2017, when all 25 stocks gained & averaged a 28.5% total return, 18 of the 25 stocks declined over the first seven weeks of 2018, with average YTD price declines at 2.7%. The 7 of the 25 stocks that generated price gains in the YTD include ESR-REIT, OUE, Oxley Holdings, United Industrial Corp, AIMS AMP Capital Industrial, Far East Hospitality Trust and OUE Hospitality Trust.

SGX lists 36 stocks with market cap above S$1 billion and dividend yields above 4%. Of the 36 stocks, 29 are trusts (REITS, Stapled Trusts or Business Trusts), while seven are companies. This includes 8 STI stocks. The five highest-yielding companies stocks include Hi-P International, M1 and STI constituents StarHub, ST Engineering and ComfortDelgro. The five highest-yielding REITs and business trusts include Lippo Malls Indonesia Retail Trust (8.8%), Hutchison Port Holdings Trust, Frasers Commercial Trust, Ascendas REIT, and OUE Commercial REIT/ Keppel Infrastructure Trust.

Following suit on the Monday and Tuesday sessions the regional MSCI AC Asia Pacific Index declined 4.9% while the STI declined 3.5%. One third of the STI stocks traded at 3-month lows yesterday. The remaining 20 STI stocks are on average 7.0% off their 3-month highs, with a majority of those highs made in Jan 2018. The 20 stocks include SATS, Singapore Airlines and Thai Beverage which on average declined the least, at -1.1%, over the two sessions of 5 Feb to 6 Feb.
