Consumer Sector Spotlight Continued Into Early December

  • While the STI generated a total return of 4.4% in the first 11 months of 2016, the three STI Consumer Staples Stocks averaged a 27.2% total return and the three STI Consumer Discretionary Stocks averaged a 15.2% total return.

  • Last week two Consumer Staples stocks - Bumitama Agri and Dairy Farm International Holdings, and two Consumer Discretionary stocks - Parkson Retail Asia and Genting Singapore, were among the 10 most actively traded stocks with the biggest volume increases. All four Consumer Sector plays gained last week, averaging a 5.3% total return.

  • While the Consumer Sectors were the strongest performers in the YTD, the Banks were the strongest performers of November. DBS Group Holdings was also amongst the 10 most actively traded stocks with the biggest volume increases last week. Based on SGX’s funds flow data, DBS saw the highest institutional investor net buy amount at S$61.5 million for the week ending 9 December 2016.



The Straits Times Index (STI) generated a total return of 4.4% in the first 11 months of 2016. The three STI Consumer Staples Stocks averaged a 27.2% total return and the three STI Consumer Discretionary Stocks averaged a 15.2% total return.


Momentum of the Consumer Sectors continued into the week ending 9 December – with the Consumer Sectors maintaining the largest representation among the 10 most actively traded stocks with the biggest volume increases for the week. Two of the four Consumer plays were Consumer Staples stocks – Bumitama Agri and Dairy Farm International Holdings. The two Consumer Discretionary stocks were Parkson Retail Asia and Genting Singapore. All four of these Consumer Sector stocks generated gains last week, averaging at 5.3% total return for the five sessions. This brought their average year-to-date total return to 4.8%.

For the purposes of this report, a stock qualifies to be actively traded if it has been listed on Singapore Exchange (SGX) for at least three months and maintains a three-month historical daily turnover of at least S$500,000.

Also making up the 10 most actively traded stocks with the biggest volume increases last week were two Industrials stocks, two Energy stocks, one Financial stock and one Utility stock. Nine of the 10 stocks made gains in total returns last week with the 10 stocks averaging 6.0% over the five sessions, bringing their average year-to-date total return to 22.1%.

Mermaid Maritime Public Company was the most actively traded stock with biggest volume increase last week. The average volume of shares traded last week was 10,033,820, almost triple its three-month average traded volume.

Meanwhile, Parkson Retail Asia was the most actively traded Consumer Sector stock with biggest volume increase last week. The average volume of shares traded last week was 10,362,400, almost two and the half times its three-month average traded volume. It generated a total return of 7.5% last week.


DBS saw Highest Net Institutional Inflow in the Week Ending 9 December 2016

While the Consumer Sectors were the strongest performers in the YTD, the Banks were the strongest performers of November. The average volume of shares traded last week for DBS Group Holdings (DBS) was 9,445,851, more than one and a half times its three-month average traded volume. It generated a total return of 10.2% in the year-to-date. Based on SGX’s funds flow data, DBS saw the highest institutional investor net buy amount at S$61.5 million for the week ending 9 December 2016.

Amongst the other top 10 volume leaders for last week, Dairy Farm International Holdings had the second highest net institutional buy amount at S$1.3 million with Mermaid Maritime at +S$0.6 million. Keppel Infrastructure Trust saw the largest net institutional outflow (-S$6.8 million) amongst the volume leaders, followed by Hutchison Port Holdings trust (-S$4.8 million) and Genting Singapore (-S$4.4 million).
