Energy Plays Among SGX Stocks With Surges In Year-To-Date Trading Activity

  • The 10 Singapore-listed stocks, that have averaged more than S$1mil in daily turnover in the 2022 year-to-date, and saw the most percentage increases in daily trading turnover as compared to the full 2021 year, include as many as 3 Energy plays – Golden Energy & Resources, Geo Energy Resources and RH Petrogas.

  • Combined, the trio averaged S$15mil of daily trading turnover, up 3.4x from 2021, while averaging close to 70% price gains in the 2022 year-to-date. For 1H22,

    • Golden Energy and Resources reported 3x y-o-y revenue growth,
    • Geo Energy Resources reported 67% y-o-y revenue growth, and
    • RH Petrogas reported 43% y-o-y revenue growth.

  • Globally, the Coal Industry has led the global stock market in the 3Q22 to 9 Sep, with Utilities the strongest of the global Sectors. While the price of Brent Crude Oil has gained close to 20% to above US$90/bbl in the 2022 year to 9 Sep, the price of Indonesia Thermal Coal Futures have rallied close to 60%.




Multiple Singapore-listed stocks, across a wide span of Sectors and Industries, have seen significant increases in trading turnover this year on the back of key global macroeconomic developments. The volatility in energy and agriculture prices with an upturn in the offshore & marine sector impacted the majority of the 10 stocks that averaged more than S$1mil in daily turnover in 2022 to 9 Sep while also maintaining the largest percentage increase in average daily turnover from 2021.

Close to 90 Singapore stocks have averaged daily turnover of at least S$1mil in the 2022 year to 9 Sep. Among these actively traded stocks, 3 debuted on the SGX Mainboard over the past 8 months, while another 7 stocks averaged less than S$1mil in daily turnover in 2021.

The table below details the 10 stocks with more than S$1mil in average daily turnover for the first 36 weeks of the year that saw the largest percentage increase in average daily turnover from 2021.

Note Hong Fok (SGX:H30) has seen a 1.7x increase in average daily trading turnover this year to above S$1mil a day compared to below S$1mil in 2021. This was the seventh of the aforementioned 7 stocks that crossed above the S$1mil threshold for the past 36 weeks of average daily trading turnover.

The significant increase in trading turnover for Frasers Hospitality Trust coincided with a proposed privatisation, with a S$0.70 per unit consideration offer. This saw the VWAP of the stapled security at S$0.70 last week, while the stock averaged a best Bid depth of S$23.5mil and best Ask depth of S$2.9mil.

The average best Bid depth and best Ask depth, as well as the average Bid-Ask spread of the 10 stocks in the last 5 trading sessions are tabled below.

The average Bid-Ask spread represents the difference between the highest Bid price and the lowest Ask price for a given stock. For instance, if the average Bid-Ask spread of Dyna-Mac is 0.11 cents, and the average mid-price of the Bid-Ask spread is at 19.0 cents, the 0.11 cent spread represents a 58 basis points spread on a 19.0 cent stock.

Of the 10 stocks tabled above, The Hour Glass, Dyna-Mac and Lendlease Global Commercial REIT maintained the tightest bid-ask spreads in terms of basis points last week, while Lendlease Global Commercial REIT and Geo Energy Resources saw the largest best Bid and Ask Depth.

Note while these 10 stocks that have seen increased trading activity this year have averaged 47% price gains in the 2022, these stocks have also saw above average annualised volatility of above 50% over the period.
